IT'S AN ANIME THING: The Tsundere
I guess most of you would describe Her as an annoying anime cliche. True, She is one of the most common anime cliches ever but I wouldn't say that it's an annoying one. She is funny and dramatic and most of the time Her personality results in an amazing plot-twist in the anime. From the 'dere' family She is the most popular and common one and today's topic of the "It's an Anime Thing" post series. Give it up for the Tsundere!
The term 'Tsundere' is actually slang and it is used to describe a female anime or even game character. It is a combination of the words "Tsun Tsun" and "Dere Dere" and each of them is used when describing the attitude of a person. "Tsun Tsun" describes a cold/curt/blunt attitude whereas "Dere Dere" is used when a person becomes all weak-minded in front of her/his crush or lover. So basically a Tsundere is a character that acts always cold and bold but becomes spoony when her crush comes around. Also she can be cold towards the main character in the beginning, but falls in love with him later on.
As already said in the beginning, I personally like Tsunderes. They are funny, spirited, dramatic, entertaining and always contribute to the story in a good way. They are always the ones that undergo a character development and are likely to add an additional, yet unexpected plot-twist. I know that there are way to many tsundere in the anime world right now, but I still don't think they are annoying. Truth is, I don't find them as hilarious and entertaining as before but they are still my second fevorite type of characters in anime. My favorite type of character is the strong and independent female lead, but they usually turn out to be a tsundere too.
Representing tsundere: Aisaka Taiga (Toradora!), Makise Kurisu (Steins Gate), Sakura (Naruto), Shana (Shakugan no Shana), Misaka Mikoto (Toaru Majutsu no Index/Railgun), Tomori Nao (Charlotte), Fujibayashi Kyou (Clannad), Toosaka Rin (Fate/ Stay Night: Ultimate Blade Works), Victorique de Blois (Gosick), Mine (Akame ga Kill), Kallen Stadtfeld (Code: Geass), Maki Nishikino (Love Live!), Kaname Chidori (Full Metal Oanic), Ayase Shinomiya (Guilty Crown), Azunyan (K-ON!), Izumi Akazava (Another) etc... There are just too many. Now, if you are quite the newbie in the anime world you'd probably be asking now how to easily recognize the tsundere in an anime. Here are some hints:
- She often screams Baka! (Idiot) every here and there and the Baka is mostly the leading male
- She's overreacting most of the time
- She can be violent from time to time
- She is usually blushing in front of the leading male character
- When someone calls her cute, she gets insulted
- She always has an excuse for doing a good deed-remember she is a 'cold' person
- She is bad at hiding her emotions
To conclude, maybe it will get boring in time but there won't be an anime character that will entertain me as much as a tsundere does. My favorite two tsunderes are definitely Aisaka Taiga and Toosaka Rin. Now I want you to tell me what you think about tsundere characters and who are your favorite ones!
I absolutely love Taiga, and really like tsunderes in general. I actually do find them annoying at times, especially because the tsundere may be in denial for so long that the anime ends without her ending up with someone or contributing to the anime. Taiga's having to deal with a broken family was part of what made Toradora awesome though, so they definitely can be the ones to make an anime amazing. But there are also a lot of times I've seen a tsundere just being annoying in an anime instead of adding to it. You named all the tsunderes I can think of though, except for Chitoge of Nisekoi.
ReplyDeleteI also like them and probably because people sometimes tell me that I am a tsundere myself. I really tried to name all of them hahaha, thanks for adding one more to the list :D
